Camping hacks

& lessons learned.

Late in april we decided to go camping in Norway. For those of you who know about the weather in scandinavia during this month – you know it can offer anything, from literally ice cold to summer heat, within the same day.

To start with, our matrass broke down on several occasions. We discovered just how bad it got when we were rolling around trying to sleep on the cold hard ground and roots at 2.30 am. One of us got up and started aggressively pumping the matrass up for the millionth time.. Before it sunk down again at around 4. Haha. Yeah, we gave in around 5.45 and got up.

Even with a millon layers of wool on us we were not prepared for that cold. We did bring a thick duvet to share and figured “eh, who needs pillows anyway”. But all in all, the setup for sleeping was not so good. Lessons learned and next time we will definetely bring…..

• A good matrass (yes, it is worth investing in a proper one if you choose to sleep in a tent). Or we might pick our hammocks next time.
• Proper sleeping bags alt. one or two big fluffy duvets (easy to fold and store) + an extra blanket or two (which can also be used in the evening before and morning after)
• Something comfortable to lean your head on (doesn’t have to be a big fat pillow, but a nice big sweater (that you’re not wearing) for example, or a dry towel)
• Appropiate clothing and especially thick socks

If you do go camping in april – prioritize the warm stuff. It will get cold. And I mean very cold.

All in all, we did have a nice trip. But here are some lessons and tricks for the rookie….

1. Do your research – where you’re going, when, how and so on.

2. Equipment for where, when and how. If it’s a cold place and time, it will probably mean even colder nights.

Same thing goes for warm places, you know when you wake up drenched in sweat? Which brings me to..

3. Location – choose wisely. Take your time scanning the place. From head to toe. For example, if you’re going to sleep in a tent, you don’t want to wake up to the scorching sun feeling like you can’t breathe – so pick a spot with shade and/or trees around (which also protects you from wind).

4. Write a list (a given, from a list-lover).. on what to pack, what you need to shop or already have laying around probably packed away somewhere “to use for that camping trip” when the time comes and so on.

My list (things to do/use/bring):
– Toothbrush/hygiene (toilet paper!! + plastic bag)
– Tea Tree oil (for spraying on face), sunscreen, antiseptic & band aids
– Storage (for food, cold & hot, jars, foil, plastic bags, bag for junk).
PS. If you’re in a place where there are bears > think again re how you store things.
– Towels (1 small, 1 big)
– Money & chargers
– Lamp! (going for a pee, seeing at all in the dark, for inside the tent when playing cards etc.)
– Food, cutlery, plates/bowls, cups, thermos…
But most importantly, a way to make fire/cook food/boil water (we used a mini camping/cooking set, which was just perfect!)
To this, any “ready made” food is really the best for a trip out in nature. Ready made soup, noodles, a silver bag of cabbage, food in a can, mix of vegetables etc. There’s lots of alternatives in the stores.. Or chop it up yourself and prep/make it the day before at home (chia pudding and vegetable sticks for example, mmm!).
Food to cook in foil is also a good idea. Or just pouring from cans/bags etc. into a pot with boiling water. Think about how to store things and when/how they go off.
You’ll want to keep it simple out there and save the advanced dinner for when you get home.
– Water! And lots of it – to clean, drink, wash, cook etc.
– Sleeping gear (see list “for next time” above) & proper clothing (maybe a hat, gloves and a scarf for later in the night.. and if you’re planning on going in the water for example – bring a bag for your swimwear) and make sure to bring extra.

5. Choose what type of camping you’re going to do before you head out – how long, fancy/less fancy etc. This pretty much shapes all of the above.

6. RESPECT NATURE – think about where and how you set up camp, do not set up a fire where it’s not allowed for safety reasons, use nature-friendly products (especially if you want to wash your body/hair with soap.. There are a lot of nice brands with this focus out there!) and look at how you leave the place (NOT LEAVING RUBBISH BEHIND should be a given!), even to a point where you think about how and where you had your poo – out of respect for nature and the place you’re visiting – otherwise you wouldn’t be able to do nr. 7 on this list. Remember, we’re the visitors.

7. ENJOY. Looking at the stars, breathing in the fresh air, feeling the water, watching time pass and what happens to the sky, listening to nature… It’s an amazing show that can replace netflix for a night or two. Downsize the need of all of the stuff. Because in the end, we get out there to meet nature – and that’s what it should be all about. Which is also why you need to protect it

Ps. That morning (at 5.45) we got up to lots of light and a mix of bright pink colors filling the sky. The smell was fresh of morning (you know that fresh “healthy” smell of nature you just want to keep inhaling in scandinavia?). The birds had already been up for quite a while, but they continued singing as we had our breakfast in the sun by the sea. The waves were also a part of the song. I had the best “fast porrige” (included in pics for specific examples below) and we both had a cup of yummy hot chocolate. Later, we had coffee and homemade cookies. That, and watching the stars with some hot wine the night before, must have been the highlights of our camping trip. And cuddling in the tent, keeping ourselves warm in that cold! Haha.

Here’s some specific examples of good foods to bring, and some pics for you to enjoy!! // Post coming up next: the recipe of the delicious (and soo simple to make) cookies I made (see last photo) for our morning coffee ??//

Vegan sausages

Vegan sausage in tortilla with kale, cabbage and mayo ?
Mixed cabbage, kale & beet salad (cabbage cooked ready in a silver bag – perfect!)

Morning magic
I make my own tea tree mist and take it with me everywhere!
Chia pudding is always a good idea, especially on the go! (why? It doesn’t change form or taste, and you can always mix and match the toppings!)
Supergröt – any quick porrige is such a good breakfast on the go!!
Chia & chocolate cookie!!! Yum! (don’t worry, recipe coming up!)

.. On that note! GET OUT IN NATURE!

I’m a dreamer baby

I dream some weird stuff. Always have and still do. A real dreamer. Usually I can remember them too, in detail. Sometimes even months after…

Running, jumping and flying above the streets..

Watching a whale leap out of the water..

Floating in the water with whales nearby..

Fighting like a ninja and climbing walls (yes, I think I have an underlying wish to be some kind of superhero)..

About the people in my life (present and from the past)..

Being chased or watched by bears (this is a recurring dream!!) that takes on different shapes and settings – I swear, I’ve probably dreamt about every bear there is..

Protecting others or losing people..

Trying to get into a house..

Not being able to run or move my legs, even when I know I can run faster (also a recurring dream!).

And ofc, there’s the ones that make no sense whatsoever (you know when you wake up all confused?)…

Ever since I was a kid I’ve always been fascinated with my dreams and have always discussed them with the people around me, but most of the time (especially as a kid) everyone just thought I had a pretty wild imagination (which I do too). But mostly I just dream, a lot.

“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.”… So now I want to know, what are your dreams like?

Bucket list – do a marathon

CHECK. My first marathon. Oslo 2019. 42,4 K. I finished 5:26, with an overall tempo between 6-9.

Nothing really went down the way it coulda/woulda/shoulda, but not a suprise with the planning and mindset I had from the start. I’ve always been a rather spontaneous person, and have always loved a challnge. And I got what I asked for, and some more…

I also have to keep reminding myself, when miss competitive/have done sports all her life goes a bit crazy, that it was my first marathon. It’s classic, like “no it will be fine, I know my body, I know me”… But it doesn’t apply to everything. It helps, yes. But no matter how well you know yourself – you don’t know yourself in every situation. Even though I’m trained, my type 1 muscles wasn’t that trained. And so, we never really know anything that our body doesn’t (even though our mind might think it knows something)… So many more factors are included. And marathons are hard. So-freaking-hard-you-have-no-idea-until-you-do-it – kind of hard. It’s also pretty damn amazing, if you’re into having a loooong fight with yourself.

I’ve heard that some people get even more excited after their first marathon and can’t wait to race again. I am not one of those people. At least not in the near future…. The fact that I made it to the finish line without breaking down (well I broke down several times, but made it out alive in the end anyway) is accomplishment enough for me. Pretty damn great actually.

Process:

First 25 K went over expectation and I felt great, filled with joy and held a nice steady tempo. After that body started breaking down, especially my right side knee and hip that’s been bothering me before… But with some love and support from my beautiful man on the side on his bike I made it into the last 17,2 K, crying. Both knees wrapped with bandages. That amount of pain in my legs was new to me. Like someone trying to rip off my entire legs from my hip joint. I’m used to feeling light, but my legs felt so heavy I couldn’t lift them properly. Literally couldn’t. Even when my head was like “oh come on, it can’t be that bad. Just shut up and do it! Do it!”. Body was like “eh, helllll no.”. Then came the laughter. And the tears. And on I went. Trying to adapt and adjust my body min after min just to pull through to the finish line. Watching some people fly by while a lot of others struggled.

Got a nice text from a friend to keep going. My family was following my every step online and rooting for me. People watched with enthusiasm and sympathy, smiled and shouted. Everyone rooted for everyone. And the mutual struggle we all faced was beautiful to see, when you took a look around, for the fact that it was so out there for everyone to see, so open, raw and real. Impossible not to be.

During those last miles I have never experienced such a strong struggle between my body and mind. It really showed me how they work together – and against one another. It also made it so clear to me how we’re actually created and meant for different things in life. In movement. Genetically and biochemically we’re built differently. Isn’t that very very cool? It never cease to amaze me.

And so in the end, we did it anyway. Amazingly. Together. Me, myself and I. With a lot of beautiful support around me of course.

Check! Next!

Do we have a choice

Lately I’ve been thinking about choices and how we all have them. Yes? No?

When facing a crossroad in life – yes, there’s a choice to take. And it’s yours. Sometimes we might say “but I didn’t have a choice“… but I often find that we do.

Blame it on the people, places, parents, experiences, friends, traumas, timing… but in the end – it’s just you. Isn’t it? When no one is around – who do you ask? You, making your own truths. Even when they’re not – they’re your truths – which becomes true, to you. That’s why I believe we need to stop blaming and instead see the fact that there’s an explanation to most things.

For example, there’s a reason to why a certain person is feeling a certain way.. There’s an explanation to why a child growing up with abuse might end up hitting or taking hits, or none of the two… The same way there’s an explanation to why you always go for the easy choice. There’s a reason why we think and feel and act the way we do. Isn’t that quite comforting? And just knowing this, we gain control. We, in the front seat, with both hands on the wheel, are in charge of our own lives, choices and truths. Not cancer, not death, not heartbreak, not time – but us, our actions, our reactions – our voice, our choice. If we choose to.

In many many situations we excuse ourselves and lean back. We let someone else take the wheel. I know I have. But in many situations, that’s just undermining ourselves. Not giving ourselves enough credit. Because making a choice doesn’t always mean making a good or a right one – but it is still making one. Even when you’re scared and confused, or certain and strong.

Isn’t it amazing how we can not control a lot of things in life – but can control our own choices?

What do you think? Can you find a situation where you felt like you “didn’t have a choice”? What are your choices today and tomorrow?

Med good reason. Materiella saker känns ofta uppfyllande. Men försöker tänka steget längre).

3. Vara sparsam och använda befintliga resurser. Less (really) is more!

life happens

Busy bees ? don’t forget to live a little (this doesn’t instantly refer to going on an expensive dreamy vacation, which you ”don’t have the time or money for right now”)… It could be something as simple as being in a moment and embracing everything in that moment. Maybe even several moments. Heck, maybe even a whole day. And the people around you. A meal. A laugh. A hug or a kiss. A touch. Just being here.

Reminder: Life is happening all the time, right here, right now, right in front of you.

Run therapy

If or when you feel like stopping – use all your sources. Why hold back? Your body and mind is Such a power tool. Whether it’s love or anger – get in there, deep, with all the feels and frustrations. Surely Something can keep you going?

I had an amazing (run) therapy session today and this is what kept me going:

1. All the people I’ve been angry or disappointed with and should’ve told off but didn’t. Literally saying ”fuck you fuck you fuck you” in my head.

2. Screaming at myself as if I’m coaching myself in my head.

3. Injustice. So many things in this world is unfair.

4. Reminding myself that I can be strong and powerful and a freaking badass. Yeah! We all need this one from time to time.

5. Imagining myself hitting (some) people like a freaking ninja. Yeah ok, I used anger today because I felt angry (as you might have noticed here by now…). Also, I had a bunch of hormones running wild. They actually helped for once!

6. Calming myself, breathing, feeling my steps, looking up and all around me. There is beauty all around when you open your eyes. And I’m here to see it.

7. Reminding myself of the gratitude, that I actually Can do this. That my body was meant for this. To move. To breathe in and out fresh air. That my body thanks, and will thank me for this, forever. Again, that I am strong, a source of power, and can become even stronger. And, that I have this strong healthy body to work with, while some people don’t.

This always keeps me going. Being my own coach, my own motivation and inspiration. It’s also why I call it therapy. Coaching.

It’s a full time job, working with yourself.

What keeps you going? ?

Facing the facts

I always had this attitude, this image, towards how a thing, an experiance, a moment, a person, a relationship, friends, family, a job (basically, a life… Well, My life) should be. How it should feel and maybe most of all – look.

I built that image in my mind growing up, as many of us did. Based on what we saw as kids, what we felt we needed and wanted out of life, and what we were told was good for us (through actions or words)… Even listening to my own voice today, it tells me what is good and/or bad. It tells me what I need and want. Sometimes it’s true, and sometimes it’s far from it. I realise it’s more of an image, in my head.

It’s a never-ending practice, this whole life thing. And the funny thing is, sometimes it doesn’t matter how much we try, how much work we put in for that image to come to life – because life happens. Read that again, life happens. That means sometimes there’s nothing we can do about it.

We forget, and I think it’s because there are a lot of things we actually can control. We constantly seek it, in our bodies and mind, don’t we? Control. Like we have this remote control to our options. Like we hold all of that power. Because the options are endless in today’s world. Our choices in life, we can control. What and who we consider family and friends to be. Who we consider ourselves to be. What we eat and how we move.. We can control a lot of things.

But love, loss, random events, moments, sickness, death – LIFE! – are just some of the things we’ll never gain the remote control to.

So sometimes, just let the movie play. Ride the waves that hit you. Good and bad, harsh and soft, the ones that come and go. Like breathing, sometimes, it’s all we can do.

Your body, your cape

? by @studioellinor

Don’t just see a naked body. See the art and magic in its ability to carry and uphold all of the knowledge, organs, bones, skin, muscles, tissue, nerves, sensations and signals… The capacity, the mind, motion, emotions and individuality.

A beautiful and precise, yet sometimes chaotic, construction put together to carry and uphold all of us. There’s nothing and nobody like yours. Isn’t that quite amazing?

Your body is your daily outfit, inside and out. Like putting on a super-cape everyday. Yet people somehow forget to treasure and see this powerful source and tool for what it is, the body. A superpower in itself. A vessel. Like the most powerful amazing rocket you can imagine shooting off to space.

So please remember, and remind yourself, everyday: to feed it, inside and out. To love it, inside and out. To trust and challange it, inside and out. To give in when necessary. And to listen when it tells you something, whether it’s loud and clear or just a whisper. We are all we have, really. Everything else is just a bonus. And we choose what we feed it.

Our bodies are specific designs and unique pieces of art. It’s what we were made of, who made us and what we make of it. We have to live in it for the rest of our lives. So live and love, inside and out.
